don't read so much into these staff faves, and certainly don't be ashamed of getting one... When an animation is selected, it could be because of the effort and attention to detail involved, the message/story, the simplicity, etc... If someone on the staff finds the animation unique and interesting, for any reason, it becomes a staff fave.
